Lakes in Carinthia – fascinating beauty south of the Alps
Visit Carinthia's famous lakes on your holiday
It's the variety of the landscape between the mountains and lakes that make Austria's southernmost state so fascinating. There are more than 2,000 lakes here and most of them are swimming lakes for the summer and ice rinks in the winter. And the fact that all of them can boast pure drinking water is pretty sensational!
Brennsee swimming lake in Bad Kleinkirchheim
Brennsee swimming lake belongs to the Bad Kleinkirchheim region. A small lake where different types of water sports are offered in collaboration with Sportschule Krainer. Sailing, surfing, stand up paddling… guaranteed fun!
Use the advantages of the Bad Kleinkirchheim Regionscard here.
Just around the corner from the Ronacher is Lake Millstatt, the second largest lake in Carinthia. The public swimming areas in Döbriach are very popular and just 14 kilometres away from your accommodation in Bad Kleinkirchheim. Lake Millstatt is distinguished by its deep green colour. Besides a whole variety of water sports, hikes along the lake are also very popular. You can head back by boat – free for Kärnten Card holders! Another highlight is the cycling path around the lake. You can conveniently borrow bikes and cycle around the lake on a leisurely half-day tour. In doing so you can also visit cultural highlights such as the abbey in Millstatt with its 1,000-year old linden tree.
Austria's largest swimming lake with numerous water sports opportunities is Lake Wörth. The party mile is legendary and the street life is vibrant in the summer. It's all happening here, Ironman, Starnacht, beach volleyball, Carinthia runs or Harley meets, seeing and being seen is the thing to do here. The bright green colour of the lake that conveys a special southern flair is also impressive. Anyone who wants to have an overview of everything should head for the Pyramidenkogel – with the world's highest wooden viewing tower. From here you have a fantastic panoramic view over the lake, into the Rosental valley, as far as the Julian Alps and naturally you can see the Nockberge Mountains too.
"When I see this lake, I no longer need the sea!" – Lake Weißensee's eastern shore is often raved about in this way. It is bright green just like in the Caribbean! Anyone who hasn't seen it is really missing out on something. It's the most naturally unspoilt of the swimming lakes and also the highest situated at 945 m above sea level. There's a stunning path along the unobscured lake from the eastern shore to the "Ronacher" rock. And in the winter the lake that reliably freezes over invites you to ice skate on its wonderful natural ice. An experience that lots of Dutch people in particular (a tour of 11 towns), but also other guests and locals love every year.
Mountain lakes in the Nockberge Mountains
You can find a real accumulation of little mountain lakes in the Nockberge Mountains. Falkertsee, Turracher See, Grünsee, Windebensee… and so on. They offer a habitat for an incredible diversity of plants and animals. They are worthwhile hiking destinations and fantastic spots for a rest.
Conclusion: you can enjoy Carinthia's lakes in a whole variety of ways all year round!
